Joel Tjelmeland
Sangamon County Board Candidate - District 14
Joel Tjelmeland is Responsive...
“I will listen to your needs and work hard to make Sangamon County and our district better and stronger.”
I was born and raised in Rochester, attended and graduated from Rochester schools and, after graduating from college at ISU, I began working for my father at Tjelmeland Laketown Automotive. I learned the business the right way – from the ground up – and now I am proud to own the business that my family worked so hard to build.

As a hardworking, independent, local business owner, I understand the responsibility of managing time demands, balancing a budget and meeting payroll – many people depend on me and hold me accountable for my actions. My family and I have a long-standing reputation for honesty and integrity, and I have made the choice to serve Sangamon County with nothing to gain politically.

I am raising two daughters with my wife Michelle, who is also an independent, local business owner (www.e-websmart.com), and our family is no stranger to challenge and adversity.

Michelle began to progressively lose her hearing soon after we were married and is now
profoundly deaf. A few years later, our eldest daughter was born a non-hearing baby.
Through shear will and determination, our strong family values held us together, and
now both my wife and daughter are able to hear with the aid of cochlear implant technology.

Michelle and I are actively involved in the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce,
Crime Stoppers, and are members of The Anchor Boat Club, Elks Lodge and The Flying 20's club.
Additionally, we are advocates for parents who have children with disabilities, serve on the Rochester PTO, volunteer for Advanced Bionics Corporation, and counsel families who have just learned of their child's deafness through the development of a not-for-profit organization, the Cochlear Implant Awareness Foundation (www.ciafonline.org).

Throughout the past four years, I have listened to the needs of the Sangamon County community, and I have made myself accessible to those who wish to share their thoughts and concerns. While in office, my fellow board members and I have addressed many of these issues, but there is still more to be done.

I hope that you will contact me about the issues that concern you and your family, and if you vote for me on November 4, I will do my best to continue the great work we’ve started.
